ETS and KNX programming: what makes a good installation

KNX hardware only does half the job. The other — invisible — half is the programming. Here's why it's decisive.

Two installations with identical KNX hardware can deliver a radically different experience. The difference lies in the configuration, done with the ETS software. Let's unpack it.

ETS, the software that orchestrates everything

ETS (Engineering Tool Software) is the KNX Association's official tool for configuring an installation. It assigns each device an address, defines who talks to whom, and programs every function. Without ETS, KNX hardware stays mute.

Why programming makes the difference

A button can do one thing… or ten. Good programming translates the way you live into smooth scenarios: a long press that closes every shutter, a “cinema” scene, an away mode. This groundwork makes an installation pleasant day to day — or frustrating if rushed.

  • Logic tailored to your real use, not a standard menu.
  • Scalable functions: add a scenario without touching the wiring.
  • A documented ETS project, reusable by any KNX integrator later.

The role of a certified integrator

KNX certifies professionals trained in ETS. Working with a certified partner means clean, documented, standard-compliant configuration — and therefore durable. It matters all the more because the ETS project is yours: it ensures you're not locked to a single provider.

What you keep

At handover, your installation is documented. The project file can be kept and passed on: if you change provider or extend your home years later, everything builds on that base. The opposite of closed, proprietary solutions.
