EV charging and intelligent load management

Plugging in the car is easy. Charging it at the right time, without tripping the house or inflating the bill, is where automation comes in.

The electric car adds a big consumer to the home. Well integrated with KNX, the charge point becomes an asset — not a strain on your electrical installation.

Why control charging

A charge point draws a lot of power. Without coordination, it can overload the supply when the oven, hob and heat pump run together. Load management avoids this by sharing out the available power.

Dynamic load management

The system monitors total consumption and adjusts charging power in real time to stay under the supply limit. The car charges at full power when the house is quiet, and slows at peaks.

  • Protection against power overruns.
  • Priority charging at night or off-peak.
  • Coordination with the other big consumers.

Charging on solar surplus

If you have solar PV, the charge point can charge primarily on the surplus you produce rather than from the grid. This maximises self-consumption: the car fills up with energy you would otherwise have exported.

Homes and commercial buildings alike

The need exists in commercial settings too: several charge points in a car park call for even finer balancing. Our KNX approach applies to both. For a professional project, see our Commercial buildings page.
